Tito Garcia (Gang Wars)

Tito Garcia, member (possible leader) of the 33rd Street Gang

Tito Garcia is a Latino character whose sole appearance is in the episode "Gang Wars" (which aired on May 18, 1985).

Tito is a teenager and the older brother of Fernando. He wears blue jeans, a white T-shirt, a magenta head band and matching jacket with a black number 33 on the left breast, signifying that he is a member, and probable leader, of the 33rd Street Gang whom he claims now runs the neighborhood.

"Gang Wars"[]

The 33rd Street Gang is in a potential turf war with the Green Street Gang who are trying to muscle in. Tito insists that Fernando join his gang, but Fernando is hesitant. Tito even asks Fat Albert if he wants to join, but when he sternly declines, Tito points out that the Green Street gang is trying to muscle in on their turf and warns him to think it over saying, "Either you're with us, or you're against us".

Fernando's death[]

The night before a park dedication at which Fernando was to be the host, the gang war between the 33rd Streeters and the Green Streeters took a deadly turn. Fat Albert and Fernando were out trying to find Tito and put a stop to it before he or someone else got hurt. When Fernando noticed that a Green Street gang member was about to shoot Tito, Fernando leaped in front of the shooter and took the bullet himself to save Tito's life, but Fernando was instantly killed. Tito tearfully vowed vengeance against the Green Street gang, but Fat Albert angrily pointed out that if Tito doesn't stop he'll wind up dead too, and Fernando's sacrifice will have been for nothing.

The police and Sergeant Hernandez quickly arrive on the scene and arrest the members of the Green Street Gang for the shooting, and Hernandez points out to Tito that he is partly responsible for Fernando's death, by the mere fact of his involvement with the 33rd Street gang, and that he was using Fernando's loyalty to him as his brother to aggressively coerce him to join.

Tito's future does not get mentioned in the epilogue, but he does show up at the dedication, so chances are Fat Albert and Sergeant Hernandez might have finally gotten through to him, albeit too late for Fernando.

Bill's Lessons[]

"Did you hear what Tito said? 'Either you're with us or against us'. Sure doesn't give you much of a choice, does it? And that's how fights start, and gang wars and world wars. And all it takes is two sides who have a disagreement, won't compromise."

"Tito learned what he should have known before. But what a terrible price that lesson cost. Tito lost a brother, Fat Albert and the guys lost a friend, and the whole world lost, too. It would've been a happier and better place if Fernando had lived. Every human life is precious and none should be wasted."
